Why We Delegate Email Delivery

Listomo is allows you to build various email lists at a fraction of the cost of other providers.

We often get asked:

Why don’t you deliver the email? You send it, but you don’t deliver it. I don’t get it. Why?

Let’s set the stage for the differences between sending and delivery.

Sending vs Delivery

First and foremost, when you send email from Listomo it gets delivered to your contacts inboxes (as long as you have a mail provider setup).

So, what’s the difference between sending and delivering? 🤔

Sending: When you “send” a piece of mail through the traditional mail service, you are the the “sender”. You are “sending” a piece of mail.

Delivering: The post office/UPS/FedEX/etc are the delivery mechanisms in which facilitate the delivery of the mail. They are “delivering” that piece of mail.

The same goes for Listomo.

Listomo is the Sender.

The mail providers (SendGrid, etc) are who delivers your mail. They’re like the USPS/UPS/FedEX’s of the world, but for email.

Sending with Listomo, Delivering with a Provider (SendGrid, etc)

You send your email with Listomo, but we merely help you in managing your contacts, your intake forms, referrals, lists, and more (automations, etc). When you tell Listomo to send a broadcast or a double confirmation email, we package it up in the proper format, make it look good, and then we hand it over to the mail delivery service (SendGrid, etc).

At that point the delivery service (SendGrid) takes over and delivers the email. They report back whether or not they sent it, if it bounced, was reported as spam, etc and we then handle those responses.

Why Doesn’t Listomo Deliver Email Like Other Mailing List Providers?

Simply put - it’s a messy messy business to get into. Mail delivery is fraught with problems that include, but are not limited to:

  • Delivery issues
  • Spam Rules
  • Delivery Abuse
  • List warm up
  • Compliance
  • … and more

There are countless stories of email companies spending the majority of their time fighting spam, domain health, hackers and worse. Here’s two reddit threads (1, 2) where some folks talk about hosting SMTP and how painful it is.

Our Core Focus

Long story short - we want to provide you with cost effective tools to host, build, maintain and grow your email lists in a cost effective manner. The majority of the cost of many of the providers is having to pay for the support of email delivery and maintaining everything in regards to that.

With Listomo, we simply delegate the delivery out to the pros and let them handle that. They deal with this stuff day in, and day out. They know this business like no other. We know the business of building integrations in order to build your list and not having vendor lock in.

So we’ll handle the business of helping you host, grow and maintain your lists, and the delivery experts will be the folks who make sure the email lands in the inbox.

Think of it like this …

You can send a letter from your house, but do you actually want to deliver it?

You’d have to create and maintain the infrastructure to actually deliver it! That’s a ton of work, effort and very costly. Do you want to have mail carriers, trucks, vehicle maintenance, airplanes, etc just to send some mail? Nah. You’ll gladly pay a few cents to have someone else manage it. That’s how we see delivery of your email in regards to list management. We love building and supporting companies, individuals, developers, startups and more in their journey to building lists for their products and services and the various integrations. We’re not excited about managing and supporting email delivery infrastructure.

That’s why we don’t deliver the email ourselves. We handle what we do best and we let the delivery pros handle the delivery.
